Her Last Call

A month later, she called again. It seemed the American businessman had lied to her; he was actually a minister, a young preacher, on a leave of absence from his church to explore Europe. He knew if he had told her the truth at first it would have been all over. But he was a nice man so the marriage was still on. But he had also told her if she ever got fat like her mother he would divorce her. What a guy! His words reinforced a little thought that I had on the subject of her eventually getting fat.

Anyway, she became the preacher’s wife, and settled in the United States and had some lovely children. I am left with a nice memory.
