Triumphs in High School

I had my little triumphs in high school. I won the Five-State Speaking Contest, and I was elected president of the student council. I think I got that job because of my democratic nature. I looked down on no one and I could get along with both the students from the country and those from the city. Sayre, a metropolitan town of 3,000, was considered the “City,” and sometimes the city folks thought they were a little better than the farmer folks.
