When
I was 13 years old I became circulation manager of the Sayre Daily
Headlight Journal with a paid circulation of 2,000. I mainly handled
the many hundreds of newspapers that went out by mail. My salary was
27 cents an hour, quite generous for my age.
I also relieved Jimmy Gee from time to time on the lead castings.
Like Jimmy, I had a little accident. One day I spilled the molten
lead down my pants leg and into my shoe. Talk about a hot foot! I
still have a scar on that foot.
