Reacting to this
generally tense situation in Shanghai, the U.S. Navy took the precaution
of recalling all its white hats (enlisted sailors) to their
base. I was given a jeep, a driver, and a shore patrol arm band and
was told to clear my section of town. Where were the white hats to be
found? In night clubs and bars and in the widest variety of locations
you could imagine, ranging from exotic penthouses to dirt-floor basements.
What a tour of Shanghai I made that night! At every establishment I
visited the hostess proprietor politely offered first a drink and then
a coffee, and lastly a girl. I told them that, being on duty, I could
accept nothing.
