The next incident
was a reminder of the state of the Chinese military at that time in
Shanghai. It happened at the old Victoria movie theater where a sailor
from the Kuomintang Chinese Navy took offense at something, pulled out
his side arm and shot a Kuomintang Army officer. There were several
other military men in the theater; they pulled out their guns and took
sides with their own branch of the service. Finally the Shanghai Constabulary
(Kuomintang Police) entered the fray, and shots echoed through the theater;
the patrons dived for the door. I had been in that very movie theater
the day before so I could easily visualize the scene.
